Abstract
Transportation networks serve as the primary foundation for economic growth and the development of nations. These networks play a pivotal role by facilitating the movement of goods and passengers, as well as providing essential resources for human activities. With the rapid urbanization and increasing population in cities, the importance and efficiency of these networks have become even more critical. Among the significant challenges faced in urban areas is traffic congestion, which leads to substantial costs, including wasted time and energy, and has negative impacts on public health. As a result, numerous studies have been conducted on the formation and spread of congestion in streets and...

Abstract
Despite its remarkable successes, Reinforcement Learning (RL) faces challenges of low sample efficiency and difficulty in generalizing knowledge to new tasks, especially when the underlying Markov Decision Processes (MDPs) differ. Inspired by the human ability to understand problems at various levels of abstraction, this dissertation presents a novel paradigm based on two-level learning to address this issue, where 'detail learning' is decoupled from 'concept learning'. To this end, the 'Experience-based Reinforcement Learning' (Ex-RL) framework and its advanced fuzzy version (Fuzzy Ex-RL) were developed. This framework utilizes an 'External Critic' that achieves a conceptual model of...

Abstract
A nanocomposite consisting of polythiophene–silver was prepared and implemented as a desired sorbent for headspace needle trap extraction. Colloidal silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) with narrow size distribution and high stability were synthesized in water–in–oil microemulsion. This simple procedure was adapted to prepare highly monodispersed Ag NPs, starting from an initial synthesis in sodium bis(2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate (AOT) reverse micelles. Polythiophene (PT) was synthesized by chemical oxidative polymerization in the presence of anhydrous ferric chloride while its polymeric structure was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FTIR). Eventually, the prepared PT was...

Abstract
A method is described for the simultaneous generation of two or more wavelengths from a dye laser pumped by a copper vapor laser (CVL). The dye laser cavity consists of one dye cell, two pairs of gratings and tuning mirrors, and one beam-splitting Thompson prism and an output mirror. This configuration allows decomposition of the dye laser beams into two grazing incidence cavities. These two emissions can have the same or different linewidth. The two collinear output beams are independently tunable over the entire gain profile of the dye, with mutually orthogonal polarizations. The gain competition effect is observed to be low

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Saboohi, Yadollah (Supervisor)
Abstract
Along with the development of social and economical development and expansion of urban areas the rate of municipal solid waste (MSW) generation has been increased. Waste-to-Energy technologies consist of any waste treatment process that enables generating energy from a waste source. In recent years many studies have shown that plasma gasification has a considerable potential as an effective method for solid waste treatment and energy recovery. Plasma gasification converts MSW to a clean syngas and its application could reduce MSW volume and the environmental risks of waste landfill. In the present study the methods of waste conversion to energy has been reviewed, then plasma gasification of...

Abstract
Nowadays, using different types of data has shown significant impacts on analyzing the related systems. Growth in data volume, systems complexity and existence of error and obscurity in collecting the data, increased the necessity of inventing new data analysis methods. Location-based data is an important data type for such analyses which are collected from sensors in different places. These data besides other official organization's information like municipality or Google … provide us a bulk volume of raw data. Such collections of raw data are mostly diverse, heterogeneous, bulk and outspread. Inspite of that, raw data with machine learning algorithms lead to considerable practical...

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology ; Najmi, Manoochehr (Supervisor)
Abstract
Previous studies and field evidences show that creating appropriate interactions between sales and marketing departments is a challenge for many organizations. The main objective of this research is to develop and elaborate a conceptual framework in which "cooperation mechanisms" between sales and marketing and it’s "consequences" determined and provide an explanation that shows how configuration of sales and marketing relationship affects its consequences. The results show that "organizational ambidexterity" is the core consequence in proper architecture of the relationship between sales and marketing. In the strategy literature, combination of the dual capabilities of exploration and...

Abstract
Reinforcement Learning (RL) has demonstrated significant accomplishments in various fields but struggles with adaptability. A common problem emerges when an agent trained to ascend a hill fails to maintain its performance under changes in conditions such as gravity or slope. Our study focuses on on-policy deep RL algorithms and enhances them by allowing the abstraction of experiences to be transferred to new agents. This approach facilitates accelerated learning through improved exploration and reduces the need for exhaustive hyperparameter optimization. This transfer can occur from the same environment or a similar one. We focus on a simple control problem as a case study. The results show...

Abstract
In this paper an iterative method for recovery of the missing samples of signals is investigated in detail, and some novel linear, nonlinear, and adaptive extrapolation techniques are proposed to be used along with it to increase the convergence rate of the recovery system. The proposed methods would remarkably speed up the convergence rate, save processing power, and reduce the delay of the system compared to some well known accelerated versions of the aforementioned iterative algorithm. © 2007 Elsevier B.V. , Article Canadian Conference on Electrical and Computer Engineering; Technology Driving Innovation, 2004, Niagara Falls, 2 May 2004 through 5 May 2004 ; Volume 4 , 2004 , Pages 2021-2024 ; 08407789 (ISSN); 0780382536 (ISBN) ; Ghandi, M. M ; Shamsollahi, M. B ; Sharif University of Technology
2004
Abstract
In this paper a new context modelling scheme for arithmetic coding of Motion Vectors (MVs) is proposed. The model uses the correlation between the horizontal and vertical components of MVs to improve the probability estimation of symbols. The accurate probability estimation can therefore improve the efficiency of the context-based arithmetic coder. The proposed scheme has been adapted to the H.264 advanced video codec and the simulation results show that a considerable bit rate saving can be achieved in MV coding

Abstract
Direct reduction of iron process in steel industry has special production conditions. Low quality cooling water, low cold and high hot cooling water temperature, space limitation for new equipment installation, high value-added of product and severe effect of cooling water temperature on production rate are of these conditions. Considering technical and economic constraints and limitations, this situation makes this process an attractive case study for converting the existing wet cooling tower to hybrid cooling system. In this paper, based on integration of process, dry and wet cooling system and ambient conditions profiles, a new method for designing hybrid cooling system has been proposed....

, Article Proc. of IMechE Part H: Journal of Engineering in Medicine ; 2009, Vol. 223, No. 6, pp. 663-675 Journal of NeuroEngineering and Rehabilitation ; Volume 11, Issue 1, 30 April 2014, Article number 78 ; Meghdari, Ali ; Vossough, Gholam Reza ; Sharif University of Technology
Abstract
The aim of this study is to employ feedback control loops to provide a stable forward dynamics simulation of human movement under repeated position constraint conditions in the environment, particularly during stair climbing. A ten-degrees-of-freedom skeletal model containing 18 Hill-type musculotendon actuators per leg was employed to simulate the model in the sagittal plane. The postural tracking and obstacle avoidance were provided by the proportional—integral—derivative controller according to the modulation of the time rate change of the joint kinematics. The stability of the model was maintained by controlling the velocity of the body's centre of mass according to the desired centre of...
Design and Construction of a Soft Actuated Exoskeleton for Hand Rehabilitation of Stroke Patients
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Ghafari, Ali (Supervisor) ; Meghdari, Ali (Supervisor)
Abstract
The main goal of this thesis is the design and development of a rehabilitation device for helping patients “to improve blood circulation” & retain and recover their abilities if possible that were lost during the stroke or a accident like that (my research in karaj/iran shows that it is possible by just movement of the specific body part). The focus is on hand in this thesis because Injuries to the hand are common and can be very debilitating since our hands are our primary means for interacting with our world. For rehabilitation in case of human hand there are several practices that should be done for patients either in home or in a rehabilitation center, time and money that is supposed to...

Abstract
In the past few decades, shaking tables are widely used to evaluate system response of structures under seismic excitations. These devices are used without any fundamental research performed on a shaking table system as an entity model. In most of these studies for simplicity, it is assumed that there exist no considerable vibration and displacement around the shaking tables, and no attention is paid to the peripheral substances such as soil settled under the foundation.
In this thesis, result of ambient vibration test on shaking table system (solid deck, concrete foundation and soil layer) has been presented. Precise sensors known as low frequency and high accuracy accelerometers have...
