    Abstract
In this paper, a simple approach is presented to determine the Muskhelishvili potential function in a generic quasi-static contact problem between two elastically similar half planes. As an example, this approach is applied to the symmetric indentation of a flat surface by a bi-quadratic punch to obtain the interior elastic stress field of the indented lower half plane

    Abstract
The two-dimensional contact problem for an elastic body indenting an elastically similar half plane resulting in double contacts is important for various applications. In this paper, a generic quasi-static two-dimensional symmetric double contact problem with nonsingular end points between two elastically similar half planes, under the constant normal and oscillatory tangential loading, is analyzed. The classical singular integral equations approach is utilized to extract the pressure and shear functions in the contact zones; subsequently boundary conditions at end points are applied and a new side condition is derived and titled "the consistency condition" for symmetric double contacts....

    Abstract
In this paper, we analyze a general quasi-static two-dimensional multiple contact problem between two elastically similar half-planes under the constant normal (including applied moments) and oscillatory tangential loading utilizing the classical singular integral equations approach. Boundary conditions at nonsingular edges of discrete contact zones are applied and new side conditions are extracted and named “the consistency conditions” for multiple contacts. These conditions are mandatory for determination of the positions of the nonsingular edges of the contact and stick zones, when the number of them exceeds the number of the discrete contact and stick zones, respectively. Consequently, a...

    Abstract
In the present study, an analytical procedure has been presented to analyze a generic two-dimensional frictional multiple contact problem between two isotropic, homogeneous and elastically similar half planes, under the constant normal (including applied moments) and oscillatory tangential loading, with partial slip behavior. This procedure is based on the classical singular integral equations approach. By applying boundary conditions at nonsingular end points, new side conditions have been derived and titled “the consistency conditions” for multiple contacts. These conditions are necessary for determining the position of nonsingular end points, when the number of them exceeds the number of...

    Abstract
Two-dimensional elastic contact problem of an asymmetrical rounded apex wedge with a half plane is considered and an analytical solution is presented for vertical and horizontal external loading in the presence of coulomb friction. The pressure and shear distribution functions are found in closed form under partial slip condition. Further by utilizing a new relation Muskhelishvili's potential function is obtained and results are analyzed. Designing better cutting tools, selecting fretting fatigue test pads and deeper lap joint analyzing are several practical applications of the outcomes

    Abstract
In this paper, a new procedure is developed for the solution of a general two-dimensional uncoupled symmetric double contact problem with smooth contact zones in which the indenter geometry is described by a piecewise biquadratic function. This procedure gives an approximate closed-form solution for any smooth indenter profile. In order to evaluate the accuracy of this approach, it is applied to the symmetric indentation of a flat surface by two rigidly interconnected parabolic indenters and results are compared with the exact unclosed-form solution. Moreover, this procedure is applied to the symmetric indentation of a flat surface by two rigidly interconnected cylinders to compare the...

    Abstract
Osseointegrated dental implants are deficient in natural periodontal ligaments. It may therefore, disrupts the natural function of implant and leads to excessive stress and strain in jaw bone. Our new proposed implant has the nonlinear internal component which imitates periodontal ligaments function. A nonlinear finite element analysis developed to investigate the efficiency of utilizing this nonlinear internal layer for three conditions of bone implant interface conditions under vertical and horizontal loading conditions. Our results so far indicate that the use of a class of material exhibiting incompressible hyperelastic behaviour as a internal layer can reduce the peak stress deduced...

Experimental Study of Drying and Calcination of Simulated High-Level Waste (HLW)

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Farahzadi, Zahra (Author) ; Samadfam, Mohammad (Supervisor) ; Zahakifar, Fazel (Supervisor) ; Zaheri, Parisa (Co-Supervisor)
    Abstract
One of the novel methods of stabilization of nuclear waste is the use of vitrification technology. In order to stabilize high level wastes (HLLW) in glass, it is required that the elements are in their oxide form. Therefore, it is necessary to evaporate the waste and turn it into a solid form so that the elements can be converted into oxide form in the calcination furnace. Hence, one of the challenges of stabilization is the optimization of evaporation and calcination conditions. In this research, the parameters affecting evaporation were first investigated. Using laboratory measurements of application: temperature (110 to 180 °C), presence of nitric acid (0.5 to 4 mol/L), ratio of zirconium...

The Study of Effective Parameters on Thorium Extraction by Cyanex 272 in an Emulsion Liquid Membrane System

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ehyaie, Darya (Author) ; Samadfam, Mohammad (Supervisor) ; Zaheri, Parisa (Supervisor) ; Zahakifar, Fazel (Co-Supervisor)
    Abstract
This study used the emulsion liquid membrane method to investigate the extraction and separation of thorium from nitrate solution. According to the results obtained from the studies, Cyanex 272 was a suitable option for selectively extracting thorium. For simultaneous extraction and stripping of thorium from dilute aqueous solutions, an emulsion liquid membrane system consisting of Cyanex 272 as an extractant, Span 80 as a surfactant and sulfuric acid solution as a receiving phase (internal phase) was used. Emulsion liquid membrane method has high mass transfer flux due to high surface to volume ratio, which causes high extraction efficiency and fast transfer of thorium ions from its low...

The Effect of Using a Viscoelastic Layer on a Dental Implant on the Stress/Strain Distribution at the Interface of Implant and Jaw Bone

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ghanati, Golsa (Author) ; Ahmadian, Mohammad Taghi (Supervisor) ; Firoozbakhsh, Keikhosrow (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Natural teeth are connected to alveolar bone by periodontal ligaments ( PDL). PDL in addition to supporting tooth have the damping effect on transferring load from tooth to the surrounding bone. The most common replacement for a complete tooth loss is the use of Osseointegrated dental implants. The healthy bone remodeling and full bonding between bone and titanium surface of the implant is subjected to a successful osseointegration. The lack of PDLs in the structure of implant-bone system could lead to the failure of implant’s components due to overloading or to the impact loads. The aim of this study is to use viscoelastic material in the structure of dental implants to compensate for the...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Safahieh, Amir Hossein (Author) ; Arjmand, Navid (Supervisor) ; Parnianpour, Mohammad (Supervisor) ; Azimi, Parisa (Co-Supervisor)
    Abstract
One of the most common spinal surgeries involves spinal fusion or vertebral fixation, which is used to treat various conditions such as intervertebral disc disease, scoliosis (lateral deviation of the spinal column), fractures, infections, or the presence of tumors in the spinal column. In this surgical procedure, the use of pedicle screws and titanium rods prevents motion and friction between two vertebrae. Screws may enter the vertebrae in the wrong position and angle, causing bone weakening, rupture of nerve roots or blood vessels, weakness or lack of sensation in some parts of the body, spinal cord injury, and in severe cases, paralysis of the patient. For this reason, fusion surgery is...

    Abstract
Conventional tooth implants lacks the damping prosperities of the periodontal ligaments (PDL) compound. It may therefore, disrupts the natural function of implant and leads to excessive stress and strain in jaw bone. Our new proposed implant has the viscoelastic properties needed to overcome such difficulties. A three dimensional finite element model of modified implant was developed and was subjected to dynamic loading condition. Our results so far indicate that the use of a class of material exhibiting viscoelastic behaviour as a damping layer can reduce the peak stress and displacement deduced from cyclic and impact loads. The stress distribution becomes more uniform in the alveolar crest...
