    Abstract
In the present paper, effects of non-uniform excitation due to spatially variation of seismic waves under the reservoir bottom on linear and nonlinear responses of arch dams are studied. Foundation is assumed to be massed and infinite elements are utilized to model semi-infinite medium via the far-end boundary of the foundation FE model. A continuum crack propagation model based on the smeared crack approach in 3D space is introduced. Reservoir's water is assumed compressible and the coupled system is solved using the staggered method. As a case study, Amir-Kabir double curvature arch dam in Iran is selected to investigate seismic behavior of the system. Two cases are analyzed in which wave...

    Abstract
In the present paper, spatially variation input effects on seismic responses of arch dams have been studied. Recorded ground accelerations at the dam foundation interface of Pacoima dam during January 13, 2001 were used for the purpose of this investigation. A numerical finite element model was developed for dynamic analysis of the dam reservoir system. The modified version of NSAD-DRI finite element program was used for the analysis and the ground acceleration time histories were interpolated at all dam foundation interface nodal points. Total and pseudo static displacements as well as developed stresses due to uniform and non uniform excitations are obtained. The results reveal that...

    Abstract
Recorded ground accelerations at various locations of Karun III Dam during November 20, 2007, were recorded by an array of accelerometers located on the dam. In terms of amplitude and phase, these accelerations show non-uniformities in different elevations. In this paper, the effect of these non-uniform ground motions on the seismic response of the dam taking dam-reservoir-foundation interaction into account is investigated. The EACD-3D-2008 finite element program and ABAQUS Software are used for carrying out the seismic analyses. For this purpose, time histories of the earthquake accelerations are interpolated at nodal points located on the dam foundation interface. The analysis has been...

    Abstract
Thermal analysis of Roller Compacted Concrete (RCC) dams is generally carried out considering identical ambient boundary conditions at upstream and downstream faces. For the case of Shahri-Kor Dam (an RCC dam with a height of 57 m), recorded thermal data depicts a considerable difference between upstream and downstream ambient temperatures, especially during cold months. This paper investigates how taking this difference into account can affect the thermal response of the dam. For this purpose, two thermal analyses are carried out with and without consideration of these different ambient boundary conditions (DABC). Consequently, the computed temperatures at representative points are compared...

Stability analysis of arch dam abutments due to seismic loading

    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Volume 24, Issue 2 , 2017 , Pages 467-475 ; 10263098 (ISSN) Mostafaei, H ; Sohrabi Gilani, M ; Ghaemian, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Abutments of concrete arch dams are usually crossed by several joints, which may create some rock wedges. Abutment stability analysis and controlling the probable wedge movements is one of the main concerns in the design procedure of arch dams that should be investigated. For decades, the quasi-static method, due to its simple approach, has been used by most of dam designers. In this study, the dynamic method is presented and the obtained time history of sliding safety factors is compared with the quasi-static results. For this purpose, all three components of Kobe (1979) and Imperial Valley (1940) earthquakes are applied to the wedge, simultaneously, and the magnitude and direction of wedge...

    Abstract
The interface behavior of rock and concrete and between layers of concrete highly affects the performance of concrete dam structures. In this investigation, a modified direct shear test was implemented in the laboratory to evaluate the interface behavior between (1) rock and conventional vibrated concrete (CVC), (2) rock and roller compacted concrete (RCC), (3) CVC and RCC and (4) two layers of RCC. Series of in situ shear tests were also performed between rock and concrete. The friction angle and cohesion for all tested interface were determined and analyzed. The effect of uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) of concrete on the interface behavior was determined. Additionally, the effect of...

    Abstract
To study the impact of dam-reservoir-foundation interaction on nonlinear response of concrete gravity dams, a two-dimensional finite element model of a concrete gravity dam including the dam body, a part of its foundation and a part of the reservoir was made. In addition, the proper boundary conditions were used in both reservoir and foundation in order to absorb the energy of outgoing waves at the far end boundaries. Using the finite element method and smeared crack approach, some different seismic nonlinear analyses were done and finally, we came to a conclusion that the consideration of dam-reservoir-foundation interaction in nonlinear analysis of concrete dams is of great importance,...

    Abstract
A new method for seismic analysis of containers in three-dimensional space is introduced in which the effects of both impulsive and convective components and their corresponding damping are accounted for in time domain. A case study is performed to investigate the behaviour of a concrete rectangular container under the effects of horizontal and vertical ground motions using the scaled earthquake components of the 1940 El-Centro earthquake record. Two-dimensional behaviour of the tank is assumed. The results of the study are compared with those obtained using the current practice and those determined from finite element (FE) analysis based on a lumped mass model. The results of the FE...

    Abstract
The permeability of roller-compacted concrete (RCC) substantially affects its functionality and safety. This study investigates the effect of mix design parameters on the performance of RCC. For this purpose, approximately 500 laboratory specimens were prepared and tested. A formula and an artificial neural network (ANN) were proposed to predict the permeability coefficient of RCC by considering the main parameters, which were then verified independently using new specimens. Furthermore, the experimental data were analyzed by the Taguchi method and analysis of variance (ANOVA) to evaluate the level of parameter contribution. Based on the results, the permeability coefficient was highly...

    Abstract
Dealing with numerical analysis of problems, especially ones with semi-infinite boundaries, scaled boundary finite element method has emerged as one of the efficient tools for the task. Combining the exactness of strong forms with the flexibility of weak formulations makes the method an improvement to its predecessors. Problem with the method arises when the analytical solution of the semi-discretized system is not available, which is the case for numerous problems. In the most recent attempt to solve the issue, a shooting method was proposed for elastostatic problems. Generality of the method removes any concerns regarding the type of governing equations since it no longer needs any...

Effect of seismic wave propagation in massed medium on rate-dependent anisotropic damage growth in concrete gravity dams

    Abstract
Seismic modeling of massive structures requires special caution, as wave propagation effects significantly affect the responses. This becomes more crucial when the path-dependent behavior of the material is considered. The coexistence of these conditions renders numerical earthquake analysis of concrete dams challenging. Herein, a finite element model for a comprehensive nonlinear seismic simulation of concrete gravity dams, including realistic soil-structure interactions, is introduced. A semi-infinite medium is formulated based on the domain reduction method in conjunction with standard viscous boundaries. Accurate representation of radiation damping in a half-space medium and wave...

    Abstract
Dynamic analysis of problems with complex geometries requires utilization of numerical methods. To completely capture the effects of seismic wave propagation in a system, one must consider the structure or irregularity within its encompassing half-space. Correct consideration of half-space in a numerical model is important specially when it comes to cases where the half-space contains semi-infinite irregularities. In this study, a generalized numerical methodology is presented for dynamic analysis of a half-space with semi-infinite irregularities. The methodology is first verified through comparison with analytical solution of known problems. Then the method is employed to solve the dynamic...

    Abstract
The classical theory of elasticity relies on the perfect structure of matter. No matter how small a medium is, it always stays homogeneous—but the reality is different. Even though the classical continuum mechanics suffices well for describing phenomena that evolve at super-microscopic scales, it ceases to reproduce reasonable responses when the size effects are pronounced. It is due to the local constitutive equations of classical continuum mechanics, which are devoid of any length scales associated with the underlying microstructure. The gradient-dependent theory of elasticity redresses this shortcoming by incorporating the kinematic quantities of the corresponding representative volume...

    Abstract
This paper proposes a precise and general multiple linear regression (MLR) model to predict the unconfined compressive strength (UCS) of various soil types. The study used a wide range of data sets, including 952 data points considering 39 soil types with varying grain sizes. The model inputs were soil physical properties, grain size, age, mixture proportion, and chemical composition of binder materials. An innovative and novel approach was developed to enhance the accuracy of the MLR model, a randomized exploratory algorithm. The model demonstrated significant accuracy with a 0.921 R2 in the testing data set. The Bayesian model averaging (BMA) method was employed for feature reduction,...

    Abstract
One of the methods in limiting tensile stresses in arch dams and removing stress concentrations at the dam-foundation interface is setting the dam body on a concrete saddle called a Pulvino. In the present study, the effects of Pulvino and peripheral joints on the static behavior and seismic performance of arch dams are investigated. Dez Dam with a height of 203 m was selected as a case study and all contraction joints of the dam body were modeled using the discrete crack approach based on as-built drawings. Also, the surrounding rock was modeled as a mass-less medium tied to Pulvino. The dam-reservoirfoundation system was analyzed under static loads accounting for stage construction...

    Abstract
In this paper, a comprehensive set of linear and nonlinear ultrasonic techniques was performed to investigate the properties of the interface between the roller-compacted concrete (RCC) layers. The effect of different time intervals between the pouring of each layer, cement content of concrete and bedding mortar, and various curing periods on RCC specimens were studied in this research. In linear methods, the interlayer led to velocity dispersion and attenuation phenomena except for the inherent inhomogeneity of specimens. The nonlinear parameters showed a general upward at the earlier ages, while the linear methods did not show an apparent regularity. The ultimate strength results were then...
