Abstract
The lipase-immobilized polyethyleneimine (PEI)- and polyacrylic acid (PAA)–coated magnetic silica nanocomposite particles (L-PEI-MS and L-PAA-MS, respectively) were prepared and applied at various transesterification reaction conditions. The reactions were carried out with soybean, sunflower, canola, and palm oils along with methanol or ethanol in the solvent-free and n-hexane systems. The highest fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) and fatty acid ethyl ester (FAEE) synthesis yields were obtained from the transesterification of palm oil, i.e., almost 7.7–10.2% higher than other oils. At the constant reaction conditions, the application of ethanol leads to higher (6.0–8.7%) reaction yields in...

Abstract
A cost-effective design of reusable enzyme-functionalized particles with better catalytic activity is of great scientific interest due to their applications in a wide range of catalytic reactions in several industrial processes. In this work, a systematic approach for preparing amine-functionalized magnetic nanocomposite particles through the surface modification of core/shell type Fe3 O4 cluster@SiO2 particles by the small molecules of 3-(2-aminoethyl)aminopropyltrimethoxysilane (AAS) or the large molecules of polyethyleneimine (PEI) with two different molecular weights, as the support materials for enzyme immobilization, has been demonstrated. The functional...

Abstract
A facile approach for the preparation of core-shell structured poly(acrylic acid) (PAA)-coated Fe3O4 cluster@SiO2 nanocomposite particles as the support materials for the lipase immobilization is reported. Low- or high-molecular-weight (1800 and 100 000, respectively) PAA molecules were covalently attached onto the surface of amine-functionalized magnetic silica nanoacomposite particles. The successful preparation of particles were verified by scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), zeta potential measurement, and Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) techniques. Once lipase is covalently...

Abstract
This study reports the importance of physicochemical characteristics of the core-shell structured polymer-coated Fe3O4 cluster@SiO2 nanocomposite particles for designing the biocatalysts used for transesterification of soybean oil. To demonstrate this issue, two different types of polymer molecules such as polyethylenimine (PEI) and polyacrylic acid (PAA) each with two different molecular weights are employed. The highest fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs) synthesis yield values are achieved by the lipases immobilized onto the low- and high-molecular-weight PEI-coated particles as compared to those of the low- and high-molecular-weight PAA-coated particles (i.e., ∼64.8% and ∼73.1% versus...

Abstract
In this study, polyelectrolyte-coated magnetic silica nanocomposites were prepared via the covalent attachment of polyelectrolytes onto the as-prepared magnetite-silica particles with core-shell structures and average diameter of 210±50 nm, and subsequently applied for the immobilization of lipase molecules. In this regard, polyethyleneimine (PEI) with two molecular weights of 10000 and 750000 and polyacrylic acid (PAA) with two molecular weights of 1800 and 100000 were utilized. The type and molecular weight of the polyelectrolyte molecules greatly impacted the concentration of binding sites on the particles surface and consequently on the lipase immobilization efficiency and loading...

Abstract
In this study, apatite formation ability on TiO2 nanotubes (TNTs) synthesized by anodizing process were compared with TNTs decorated by MnO nanoparticles. The MnO nanoparticles used for decoration process were fabricated via thermal decomposition method. At first, it was strived to find the optimal condition of anodizing process and the effect of applied voltages (15 V, 20 V, and 25 V) and process times (15 min, 20 min, and 25 min) on the diameter of the synthesized TNTs was investigated. Results of microscopic characterizations showed that the completely uniform structure of nanotubes with a diameter in the range of about 100–130 nm was achieved after 20 min of anodizing process at an...

Abstract
This paper presents fly-ability, trim-ability, stability, and control ability of a mono-wing aerial vehicle as an under-actuated multi-body system. A nonlinear mathematical model of this vehicle with translational and rotational movements is developed. Based on early simulations, a conceptual prototype of the mono-wing is initially designed and constructed. A comprehensive nonlinear simulation is then performed by modeling aerodynamic forces and moments using the Blade Element Momentum (BEM) theory. Modeling and simulation are validated against experimental data to satisfy research needs. Twenty-three efficient dynamic parameters of the mono-wing are studied in ninety-seven simulation...

Abstract
The intricate concept of inherent stabilization of a mono-wing aerial vehicle, as a Nonlinear Time-Periodic (NLTP) system is investigated in this research. Stability analysis has been performed based on the dynamic characteristics of the system by using the most appropriate approaches, including Floquet theory, averaging theory, and kinetic energy integration. To achieve stable flight performance, specifying the admissible range of the aerodynamic coefficients and system parameters has been proposed. Using Floquet analysis, the system has initially been linearized around the periodic orbit that was found by numerical techniques. The stability condition of the linear model has been studied by...
Coupled Trajectory and Attitude Control of an Exoatmospheric Interceptor
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Nobahari, Hadi (Supervisor)
Abstract
In this thesis, coupled trajectory and attitude control of an exoatmospheric interceptor is investigated. The interceptor is considered to track and intercept orbital targets in its terminal phase using an infrared strapdown seeker. Attitude control system uses its thrusters in order to keep permanently the detector toward the target in both elevation and azimuth directions. Detector is attached to the body. Divert thrusters generate acceleration perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the interceptor to correct the trajectory. It is assumed that the interceptor has mass asymmetries. Transltional and rotational dynamics are coupled. Therefore, in order to improve the performance of...

Abstract
Servo drive systems require a fast dynamic response for position control applications. Conventional cascade control structure has sluggish response due to bandwidth limitations on speed and current control loop. To achieve a fast output response, model reference adaptive control methods can be used to remove the dynamics of inner control loops. In this paper, feed-forward signals are generated using model predictive control which is combined with the conventional cascade structure. Using this approach, a fast transient response and satisfactory tracking ability can be achieved. The proposed control configuration is verified by the simulation results

Abstract
We investigate large wireless networks subject to security constraints. In contrast to point-to-point, interferencelimited communications considered in prior works, we propose active cooperative relaying-based schemes. We consider a network with nl legitimate nodes, ne eavesdroppers, and path loss exponent α ≥ 2. As long as n2e (log(ne))γ = o(nl ), for some positive γ , we show that one can obtain unbounded secure aggregate rate. This means zero-cost secure communication, given fixed total power constraint for the entire network. We achieve this result through: 1) the source using Wyner randomized encoder and a serial (multi-stage) block Markov scheme, to cooperate with the relays and 2) the...

Abstract
Investigating the impact of geological uncertainty (i.e., spatial distribution of fractures) on reservoir performance may aid management decisions. The conventional approach to address this is to build a number of possible reservoir models, upscale them, and then run flow simulations. The problem with this approach is that it is computationally very expensive. In this study, we use another approach based on the permeability contrasts that control the flow, called percolation approach. This assumes that the permeability disorder of a rock can be simplified to either permeable or impermeable. The advantage is that by using some universal laws from percolation theory, the effect of the complex...

Abstract
Recently, a new class of binary codes for overloaded CDMA systems are proposed that not only has the ability of errorless communication but also suitable for detecting active users. These codes are called COWDA. In [1], a Maximum Likelihood (ML) decoder is proposed for this class of codes. Although the proposed scheme for coding/decoding shows impressive performance, the decoder can be significantly improved. In this paper, by assuming practical conditions for the traffic in the system, we suggest and prove an algorithm that increases the performance of the decoder several orders of magnitude (the Bit-Error-Rate (BER) is divided by a factor of about 400 in some E b/N0's). The algorithm...

Abstract
In this paper we present new methods to estimate the effective permeability (keff) of heterogeneous porous media with a wide distribution of permeabilities and various underlying structures, using percolation concepts. We first set a threshold permeability (kth) on the permeability density function and use standard algorithms from percolation theory to check whether the high permeable grid blocks (i.e., those with permeability higher than kth) with occupied fraction of “p” first forms a cluster connecting two opposite sides of the system in the direction of the flow (high permeability flow pathway). Then we estimate the effective permeability of the heterogeneous porous media in different...

Abstract
It has long been understood that flow behavior in heterogeneous porous media is largely controlled by the continuity of permeability contrasts. With this in mind, we are looking in new methods for a fast estimation of the effective permeability which concentrates on the properties of the percolating cluster. From percolation concepts we use a threshold permeability value (Kth) by which the gridblocks with the highest permeability values connect two opposite side of the system in the direction of the flow. Those methods can be applied to heterogeneous media of a range of permeabilities distribution and various underlying structures. We use power law relations and weighted power averages that...

Abstract
Precise prediction of Remaining Useful Life (RUL) within the transportation industry is essential for cost reduction and enhanced energy efficiency, focusing on extending the operational lifespan of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). In pursuit of this objective, this study employs data-driven prediction methodologies centered on deep neural networks and transfer learning. The fundamental premise is that these approaches hinge on the compatibility of functional conditions across diverse datasets. Multiple strategies, amalgamating transfer learning, and deep neural networks, are introduced to forecast the PEMFC stack's behavior and its associated RUL. Network hyperparameters are...

Abstract
Indium tin oxide (ITO) thin films have been deposited using RF sputtering technique at different pressures, RF powers, and substrate temperatures. Variations in surface morphology, optical properties, and film resistances were measured and analyzed. It is shown that a very low value of sheet resistance (1.96 ω/sq.) can be achieved with suitable arrangement of the deposition experiments. First, at constant RF power, deposition at different pressure values is done, and the condition for achieving minimum sheet resistance (26.43 ω/sq.) is found. In the next step, different values of RF powers are tried, while keeping the pressure fixed on the previously found minimum point (1-2 Pa). Finally,...
Comparative assessment of gasification based coal power plants with various CO2 capture technologies producing electricity and hydrogen

Abstract
Seven different types of gasification-based coal conversion processes for producing mainly electricity and in some cases hydrogen (H2), with and without carbon dioxide (CO2) capture, were compared on a consistent basis through simulation studies. The flowsheet for each process was developed in a chemical process simulation tool "Aspen Plus". The pressure swing adsorption (PSA), physical absorption (Selexol), and chemical looping combustion (CLC) technologies were separately analyzed for processes with CO2 capture. The performances of the above three capture technologies were compared with respect to energetic and exergetic efficiencies, and the level of CO2 emission. The effect of air...

Abstract
Single-crystal hydroxyapatite (HAp) nanorods and nanogranules have been synthesized successfully by a mechanochemical process using two distinct experimental procedures. The experimental outcomes are characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques. In this work, the feasibility of using polymeric milling media to prepare hydroxyapatite nanoparticles is described. The resulting hydroxyapatite powder exhibits an average size of about 20 to 23 nm. Final results indicate that the proposed synthesis strategy provides a facile pathway to obtain single-crystal HAp with high quality and suitable morphology. © 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights...
