Proposing a Method for Evaluating Cognitive Complexity of Modeling Languages
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Mirian Hosseinabadi, Hassan (Supervisor)
Abstract
Modeling languages are well-known mechanisms for describing the underlying structures in software and many other contexts. In order to use an information technology product to solve a specific problem, such as a modeling language, not only there is a need to cognize the problem and search for its solution, but also it’s necessary to have a correct perception of context and details of modeling language in first place. One of the setbacks that users encounter in perceiving the sense of diagrams and their details is cognitive complexity. Although lots of modeling languages are defined and introduced up to now, but there are no suitable yardsticks to evaluate the cognitive complexity of users...
Factors affecting platinum extraction from used reforming catalysts in iodine solutions at temperatures up to 95 °C
, Article Hydrometallurgy ; Volume 97, Issue 1-2 , 2009 , Pages 119-125 ; 0304386X (ISSN) ; Baghalha, M ; Sharif University of Technology
2009
Abstract
Platinum extraction from the spent reforming catalysts in iodine-iodide solutions at temperatures from 25 to 95 °C was investigated. The reforming catalyst mostly consists of a porous gamma alumina support with metallic platinum finely dispersed on the walls of the nano-pores of the catalyst support. The effect of a variety of factors, including catalyst particle size, impeller agitation speed, reactant concentrations, liquid to solid mass ratio, temperature and the solution pH on the Pt extraction rate and recovery were investigated. It was found that the catalyst particle sizes less than 106 μm and impeller agitation speed higher than 700 rpm eliminated the effects of catalyst size and...
Numerical Investigation of Stress Absorbing Membrane Interlayer
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Motamed, Arash (Supervisor)
Abstract
Stress Absorbing Membrane Interlayer (SAMI) is a slightly thin layer made of bitumen and aggregate placed between a pavement with limited cracking and overlay in order to avoid reflective cracking in overlay. SAMI’s performance depends on many factors such as pavement layer’s materials and thickness and existing pavement’s condition. Numerical simulations are powerful tools to evaluate SAMI’s performance. Previous studies showed that construction of SAMI does not necessarily reduce reflective cracking. This research investigated the effect of different parameters on SAMI’s performance using numerical simulations. The focus of this study was on the performance of SAMIs used between asphalt...

Abstract
"Programmable networks" are to facilitate and evolve the computer networks. Specifically, Network Defined Software (SDN) is an advanced and innovative solution in the new computer network in which the hardwares are completely independent of the control and decision regarding data transfer. Based on this logic, network management becomes much simpler and enables innovation and new solutions for different parts of the network. In SDN, the program or network intelligence is logically present in software-based controllers (on the control panel) and can be changed and programmed, and network devices are converted into network packet sending hardware (on the data page) through an interface, Such...

Abstract
In this work, we investigate the MOdified Gravity (MOG) theory for dynamics of the Universe and compare the results with the Lambda cold dark matter (ΛCDM) cosmology. We study the background cosmological properties of the MOG model and structure formation at the linear perturbation level. We compare the two models with the currently available cosmological data by using statistical Bayesian analyses. After obtaining updated constraints on the free parameters, we use some methods of model selection to assist in choosing the more consistent model such as the reduced chi-squared (χ 2red) and a number of the basic information criteria such as the Akaike Information Criterion (AIC), the Bayes...
Numerical and Experimental Investigation of Thermally Driven Exchange Flow and Wind set up in Canopy Steep Area
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Jamali, Mirmosaddegh (Supervisor)
Abstract
Solar heating in aqautic systems, causes tempreture increasing. This temperature difference will promote an exchange flow between the vegetation and open water. The exchange flow generated by the differential heating and cooling associated with depth variation has also been studied through laboratory experiment and modelling. Differential solar heating can result from shading by rooted emergent aquatic plants, producing a temperature difference between vegetated and unvegetated regions of a surface water body. Horizontal density difference between shaded and open water regions drives currents that carry fluxes between biologically and chemically distinct regions of an aquatic system. Such...

Abstract
Preservation and survival of ecological systems by vegetation is important. A study focusing on the hydrodynamics of these complex ecosystems could help to explain the filtering ability of vegetation in wetlands and estuaries. Wetlands assist in flood control, shoreline protection, and groundwater recharge. In addition, they play a purification role in removing sediments and contaminants from polluted waters, nutrient uptake, and oxygen production.

Coexistense of Dirac and Weyl Fermions in Topological Semimetals
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Kargarian, Mehdi (Supervisor)
Abstract
Dirac-Weyl semimetals are new topological phases hosting the coexistence of Dirac and Weyl points in momentum space. Due to the different symmetry requirements of Weyl and Dirac semimetals, one may wonder whether these phases can coexist in real materials. Based on first principles calculations the noncentrosymmetric compounds SrHgPb and CaHgSn have band structure with the Dirac-Weyl crossings. In this thesis we introduce four band minimal lattice models which preserve n-fold rotation along z axis and break inversion symmetry. The obtained models use the minimum number of degrees of freedom, spin and orbital, and proper symmetries relevant to real materials yielding a four-band model where...
Optical Probing of Collective Excitonic Modes within Excitonic Insulators
, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology ; Kargarian, Mehdi (Supervisor)
Abstract
The excitonic insulator phase is a quantum state of matter resulting from the macroscopic coherent condensation of electron-hole bound states. As such, it shares similarities with superconductivity, exhibiting superfluid-like behavior and collective Higgs and Goldstone modes. The discovery of primary excitonic candidates at cryogenic temperatures has spurred research into materials with higher critical temperatures and stable conditions. Recently, several transition metal chalcogenides have emerged as promising high-temperature excitonic insulators. However, the interplay between excitonic condensation and structural phase transitions in these materials presents a significant challenge to...

Abstract
Removing polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) from subsurface water, soils, and transformer oil is crucial to save the environment from these pollutant materials. Hydrodechlorination (HDC) of PCBs consists of numerous chemical reactions and the simple kinetic models may not provide details for the process. To gain more awareness of the reaction mechanism, in the proposed approach, the isoconversional methods of the Friedman were investigated paralleling other kinetic models of Langmuir-Hinshelwood (L-H), Eley-Rideal (E-R), pseudo-first-order, and pseudo-second-order methods. The analysis was validated by laboratory results of HDC of contaminated transformer oil in front of Pd/MWCNTs. The most...

Blind Universal Steganalysis in Multiple Actor Paradigms and its Relation to Pixel-Cost
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Gholampour, Iman (Supervisor)
Abstract
Steganography is method for communicating confidential information through a non-trustworth in way which hides the existence of communication. For improving the security of steganography statistical detectability must decrease as such as possible. Despite the fact, that the quality of the relation between statistical detectability and amount of distortion engendered by embedding is still an open problem, problem of detectability reduces to problem of management of pixel embedding in order to minimization of distortion. As in wet paper coding methods, an optimum (or approximately optimum) algorithm proportioned to Pixel-cost has been offered, the current problem of steganography is to find...
