Abstract
In this paper, an analysis of the harmonic contents of the optical output power for an in-plane single mode laser diode is performed, and the results are described in detail. In the first step, the absolute value of power for each harmonic is obtained in terms of various laser diode parameters, and the variations of external parameters, such as modulation current, bias current and frequency, are discussed. The analysis is done by direct solution of the rate equations of an arbitrary laser diode for carrier and photon densities. It is known that the optical power has a nonlinear dependence on frequency, and the maximum optical power of each harmonic is attained in its resonance frequency. The...

Abstract
We have performed an analysis of harmonic contents of the optical output power for a diode laser and described the results in details. In the first step the absolute value of power for each harmonic is obtained in terms of various diode laser parameters, and the variations of external parameters such as modulation current, bias current and frequency are discussed. The analysis is done by direct solution of rate equations of an arbitrary diode laser for carrier and photon densities. We conclude that the maximum power occurs at isolated peaks and their loci have been investigated and shown to be predictable by theory. It is known that the optical power has a nonlinear dependence on frequency,...

Abstract
A novel plane-wave-based approach for analytical treatment of dispersive relation is developed and applied to analyze the behavior of electromagnetic waves in plasmonic-photonic-crystal slabs. Here Drude model is used for describing frequency dependent permittivity of plasma rods in host dielectric medium. In the present work, dispersion relation below and above the light line is calculated approximately by means of Maxwell-Garnett effective medium and Revised Plane Wave Method (RPWM). The eigen-functions are then used in Revised Guided Mode Expansion (RGME) as the set of orthonormal bases. Following this procedure, the accurate band structure is obtained. In these kind of methods there are...

Abstract
Brain Computer Interface (BCI) systems, which are based on motor imagery, enable humans to command artificial peripherals by merely thinking about the task. There is a tremendous interest in implementing BCIs on portable platforms, such as Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAS) due to their low-cost, low-power and portability characteristics. This article presents the design and implementation of a Brain Computer Interface (BCI) system based on motor imagery on a Virtex-6 FPGA. In order to design an accurate algorithm, the proposed method avails statistical learning methods such as Mutual Information (MI), Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA), and Support Vector Machine (SVM). It also uses...

Abstract
Recently, interaction of electromagnetic waves with conducting interfaces has been studied and several applications have been proposed. For instance, new type of photonic crystals similar to Kronig-Penny electronic crystals has been implemented by using these structures. In these structures a free two dimensional interface charge layer is generated at the dielectric interfaces and interesting phenomena are observed. In this manuscript, the effect of finite charge layer thickness and its asymptotic behavior toward conducting interface, where the thin charge layer is modelled via a surface conductivity σs, is numerically studied for the first time. Two different regimes are considered: first,...

Abstract
The outlook of brain-computer interfacing (BCI) is very bright. The real-time, accurate detection of a motor movement task is critical in BCI systems. The poor signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR) of EEG signals and the ambiguity of noise generator sources in brain renders this task quite challenging. In this paper, we demonstrate a novel algorithm for precise detection of the onset of a motor movement through identification of event-related-desynchronization (ERD) patterns. Using an adaptive matched filter technique implemented based on an optimized continues Wavelet transform by selecting an appropriate basis, we can detect single-trial ERDs. Moreover, we use a maximum-likelihood (ML),...
On the power-bandwidth trade-off in bistable photonic switches

Abstract
Low power operation and high speed have always been desirable in applications such as data processing and telecommunications. While achieving these two goals simultaneously, however, one encounters the well-known powerbandwidth trade-off. This is here discussed in a typical bistable switch based on a two-dimensional photonic crystal with Kerr type nonlinearity. The discussion is supported by the nonlinear finite difference time domain (FDTD) simulation of a direct coupled structure with a home-developed code. Two cases of working near resonant and off- resonant are simulated to compare the power and the speed of the device in the two cases. It is shown that working nearresonance reduces the...

Abstract
Planar grating diffraction analysis based on Legendre expansion of electromagnetic fields is reported. In contrast to conventional RCWA in which the solution is obtained using state variables representation of the coupled wave amplitudes; here, the solution is expanded in terms of Legendre polynomials. This approach, without facing the problem of numerical instability and inevitable round off errors, yields well-behaved algebraic equations for deriving diffraction efficiencies, and can be employed for analysis of different types of gratings. Thanks to the recursive properties of Legendre polynomials, for longitudinally inhomogeneous gratings, wherein differential equations with non-constant...

Abstract
The brain-computer interfacing (BCI), a platform to extract features and classify different motor movement tasks from noisy and highly correlated electroencephalogram signals, is limited mostly by the complex and power-hungry algorithms. Among different techniques recently devised to tackle this issue, real-time onset detection, due to its negligible delay and minimal power overhead, is the most efficient one. Here, we propose a novel algorithm that outperforms the state-of-the-art design by sixfold in terms of speed, without sacrificing the accuracy for a real-time, hand movement intention detection based on the adaptive wavelet transform with only 1 s detection delay and maximum...

Abstract
In this paper optical filters based on photonic resonant tunneling effect are analyzed by using the polynomial expansion method. Amplitude and phase response together with their dependency on the physical parameters of the filters are also investigated. These steep-edge filters show low insertion loss amplitude response, and linear phase variation in their passband, a suitable feature for WDM and DWDM applications where constant time delay and dispersion free devices are needed. Two kinds of filters, namely discrete level and continuous profile filters are introduced. These structures can be analyzed and designed by using Transfer Matrix Method. However, this approach suffers from inaccuracy...

Abstract
Three-dimensional vectorial diffraction analysis of phase and amplitude gratings in conical mounting is presented based on Legendre expansion of electromagnetic fields. In the so-called conical mounting, different fields components are coupled and the solution is not separable in terms of independent TE and TM cases. In contrast to conventional RCWA in which the solution is obtained using state variables representation of the coupled wave amplitudes by expanding space harmonic amplitudes of the fields in terms of the eigenfunctions and eigenvectors of the coefficient matrix defined by rigorous coupled wave equations, here the solution of first order coupled Maxwell's equations is expanded in...

Abstract
A Legendre polynomial expansion of electromagnetic fields for analysis of layers with an inhomogeneous refractive index profile is reported. The solution of Maxwell's equations subject to boundary conditions is sought in a complete space spanned by Legendre polynomials. Also, the permittivity profile is interpolated by polynomials. Different cases including computation of reflection-transmission coefficients of inhomogeneous layers, band-structure extraction of one-dimensional photonic crystals whose unit-cell refractive index profiles are inhomogeneous, and inhomogeneous planar waveguide analysis are investigated. The presented approach can be used to obtain the transfer matrix of an...

Abstract
Analytical analysis of straight single-line defect optical waveguides in two dimensional photonic crystals based on expanding electromagnetic fields in terms of Hermite polynomials is reported. This novel electromagnetic field expression is substituted in Helmholtz equation, a new set of linear ordinary differential equations with variable coefficients are obtained, and by employing differential transfer matrix method; defect modes, i.e. the guided modes propagating in the line defect waveguide, are analytically derived. The validity of the results obtained by applying the proposed approach are confirmed by comparing them to those derived by using finite difference time domain method

Abstract
A novel approach for photonic crystals devices analysis, based on perturbation theory is reported. In this method the photonic crystal device is considered as the superposition of a parent lattice and a perturbing one. Then the solution is investigated in terms of the eigensolutions of the parent lattice. This way, one can easily obtain analytic expressions within the first order perturbation, describing the effects of different parameters on the eigensolutions of the structure. The perturbation theory employed in this work is typical of what is conventionally used in quantum mechanics literature. The proposed method is explicit, works fast, and does not involve complicated numerical...

Abstract
Several methods have been developed in the past for analyzing the porosity and other types of well logs for large-scale porous media, such as oil reservoirs, as well as their permeability distributions. We developed a method for analyzing the porosity logs φ(h) (where h is the depth) and similar data that are often nonstationary stochastic series. In this method one first generates a new stationary series based on the original data, and then analyzes the resulting series. It is shown that the series based on the successive increments of the log y(h)=φ(h+δh)-φ(h) is a stationary and Markov process, characterized by a Markov length scale hM. The coefficients of the Kramers-Moyal expansion for...

Abstract
Yeh et al. have recently proposed a mutual authentication protocol based on EPC Class-1 Gen.-2 standard. They claim their protocol is secure against adversarial attacks and also provides forward secrecy. In this paper we show that the proposed protocol does not have cited security features properly. A powerful and practical attack is presented on this protocol whereby the whole security of the protocol is broken. Furthermore, Yeh et al.'s protocol does not assure the untraceabilitiy and backwarduntraceabilitiy attributes. We also will propose our revision to safeguard the Yeh et al.'s protocol against cited attacks

Abstract
In this paper, we show how time-sharing method may reduce transmission delay in the dynamic index coding scenario. We propose a novel time-shared dynamic index coding transmission scheme that achieves the maximum index coding gain for a complete bi-directional side information graph and formulate a constrained optimization problem to tune the transmission scheme for the minimum transmission delay. A closed-form solution is presented for the special case of two-user. We also use analytical and simulation results to provide graphical intuition for the obtained results

Abstract
Dynamic index coding is a practical generalization of conventional index coding that deals with real dynamic traffic streams. We identify the code-constrained capacity region of a dynamic index coding problem with a complete bi-directional side information graph and introduce the performance metric of dynamic index coding gain to measure how dynamic index coding reduces the required data transmissions. A greedy dynamic index coding scheme is proposed that achieves the maximum coding gain almost everywhere in the identified capacity region. Although the greedy scheme attains the maximum coding gain, its selfish nature may unacceptably increase transmission delay. To address this issue, a...
