    In spite of the high success rate of existing total knee replacement implants, the aseptic loosening of components, particularly the tibial one, is a matter of concern. To control the short- and long-term loosening mechanisms, the tibial stem material shall have diverse stiffness properties in different regions and directions, such that it encourages osseointegration and prevents bone resorption.     We carry out an exact analysis of the average frequency ν+ αxi in the direction x i of positiveslope crossing of a given level α such that, h(x, t) h = α, of growing surfaces in spatial dimension d. Here, h(x, t) is the surface height at time t, and h is its mean value. We analyze the problem when the surface growth dynamics is governed by the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) equation without surface tension, in the time regime prior to appearance of cusp singularities (sharp valleys), as well as in the random deposition (RD) model.     We describe and discuss the recent progress in the study of propagation and localization of acoustic and elastic waves in heterogeneous media. The heterogeneity is represented by a spatial distribution of the local elastic moduli.     Propagation of acoustic waves in strongly heterogeneous elastic media is studied using renormalization group analysis and extensive numerical simulations. The heterogeneities are characterized by a broad distribution of the local elastic constants. We consider both Gaussian-white distributed elastic constants, as well as those with long-range correlations with a nondecaying power-law correlation function.     Abstract
    The joint probability distribution function (PDF) of the height and its gradients is derived for a zero tension d + 1-dimensional Kardar-Parisi-Zliang (KPZ) equation. It is proved that the height's PDF of zero tension KPZ equation shows lack of positivity after a finite time tc. The properties of zero tension KPZ equation and its differences with the case that it possess an infinitesimal surface tension is discussed.     Abstract
    Using the cross-correlation of the wavelet transformation, we propose a general method of studying the scale dependence of the direction of coupling for coupled time series. The method is first demonstrated by applying it to coupled van der Pol forced oscillators and coupled nonlinear stochastic equations. We then apply the method to the analysis of the log-return time series of the stock values of the IBM and General Electric (GE) companies. Our analysis indicates that, on average, IBM stocks react earlier to possible common sector price movements than those of GE

    Abstract
    We report on a study of the Tehran Price Index (TEPIX) from 2001 to 2006 as an emerging market that has been affected by several political crises during the recent years, and analyze the non-Gaussian probability density function (PDF) of the log returns of the stock prices. We show that while the average of the index did not fall very much over the time period of the study, its day-to-day fluctuations strongly increased due to the crises. Using an approach based on multiplicative processes with a detrending procedure, we study the scale-dependence of the non-Gaussian PDFs, and show that the temporal dependence of their tails indicates a gradual and systematic increase in the probabilityof...

    The stochastic φ4-theory in d dimensions dynamically develops domain wall structures within which the order parameter is not continuous. We develop a statistical theory for the φ4-theory driven with a random forcing which is white in time and Gaussian-correlated in space.     Abstract
    We propose a method for analyzing the data for the rates of exchange of various currencies versus the U.S. dollar. The method analyzes the return time series of the data as a Markov process, and develops an effective equation which reconstructs it. We find that the Markov time scale, i.e., the time scale over which the data are Markov-correlated, is one day for the majority of the daily exchange rates that we analyze. We derive an effective Langevin equation to describe the fluctuations in the rates.     Abstract
    By detailed analytical treatment of the shock dynamics in the Burgers turbulence with large scale forcing we calculate the velocity structure functions between pairs of points displaced both in time and space. Our analytical treatment verifies the so-called Taylor's frozen-flow hypothesis without relying on any closure and under very general assumptions. We discuss the limitation of the hypothesis and show that it is valid up to time scales smaller than the correlation time scale of temporal velocity correlation function. We support the analytical calculation by performing numerical simulation of the periodically kicked Burgers equation. © 2008 The American Physical Society

    Abstract
    We propose a novel method for analyzing precursory seismic data before an earthquake that treats them as a Markov process and distinguishes the background noise from real fluctuations due to an earthquake. A short time (on the order of several hours) before an earthquake the Markov time scale tM increases sharply, hence providing an alarm for an impending earthquake. To distinguish a false alarm from a reliable one, we compute a second quantity, T1, based on the concept of extended self-similarity of the data. T1 also changes strongly before an earthquake occurs.
