Development of a Temperature-Dependent Constitutive Model for Anisotropic Metal Diaphragm Using Experimental Method
, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology ; Hosseini Kordkheili, Ali (Supervisor)
Abstract
The purpose of this thesis is to use experimental and numerical tools to develop new constitutive models based on the Johnson Cook's model to predict the plastic deformation and failure of metallic diaphragms. Initially as the first case study, by designing and constructing a bulge test mechanism, the elastic-plastic behavior of 0.05 mm thickness pure aluminum diaphragms for a temperature range of 25-150℃ and large strains was extracted. Then, by presenting an innovative method, the biaxial stress-strain curves are transformed into uniaxial curves. By examining the observed behavior, a new constitutive model is developed based on the Johnson Cook's model. The ability of this constitutive...
A Modified JC Constitutive Equation for 5052 Aluminum with 0.3 mm Thickness Considering Loading Rate Effect at Quasi-Static Range
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Hosseini Kordkheili, Ali (Supervisor)
Abstract
In this thesis, both experimental and numerical approaches are conducted to present a constitutive equation for 5052 aluminum diaphragms under quasi-static strain rate loadings. For this purpose the stress-strain curves at different strain rates are obtained using tensile tests. Brittle behavior during tensile tests is observed due to samples thin thicknesses. Employing Johnson-Cook constitutive equation no yields in reasonable agreement with these tensile tests results. Therefore, developing a more suitable constitutive equation for aluminum diaphragms is taken into consideration. This equation is then implemented into the commercial finite element software, ABAQUS, via a developed user...
Identification and Characterization Natural Products from Borage Leaves Extract Acting as Anti-amyloid Inhibitors
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Kalhor, Hamid Reza (Supervisor) ; Sajadi, Ali Akbar (Co-Advisor)
Abstract
Natural products obtained from plant extract are well known as a valuable source for research and assessments which eventuates to the discovery of some compounds possessing biological and pharmacological properties. Our aims have been to investigate and identify some natural products having the ability to effect on protein misfolding. In neurodegenerative disorders, like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s, a protein or a peptide undergoes conformational changes, and consequently the protein transform to fibrils coined amyloid. To determine the effective anti-amyloid compounds in natural products, Borage leaves was chosen. The plant extract was extracted using soxhlet and applied to hen white egg...

Abstract
A plastic temperature-dependent constitutive model is developed for 0.05 mm thickness pure aluminum diaphragms at large strains by using bulge test method. Rupture strain of the material is recorded below two percent according to tensile tests. In order to achieve the material behavior at larger strains, an own bulge test apparatus is used to extract equi-biaxial stress-strain curves at different temperatures, i.e. from room to 150 °C. Effective stress-strain behavior is then computed via a transformation scheme using the plastic work definition as well as the room temperature uniaxial stress-strain curve. It is illustrated that the Johnson-Cook constitutive model is not able to capture this...

Abstract
Phenomenological constitutive modeling of Ti-6Al-4V at temperatures between 923 and 1023 K under 0.0005–0.05 s−1 quasi-static rates is studied based on a phenomenological approach. For this purpose, the Johnson–Cook constitutive model is revisited. At low temperature conditions under moderate to high strain rates, the material’s stress–strain curves are the most similar to power-law function. Contrary to this, at high temperature conditions under low to moderate strain rates, the saturation-type function well describes the stress–strain curves. On the other hand, it is illustrated that the Johnson–Cook constitutive model is feeble to predict the material’s behavior correctly. Accordingly, in...

Abstract
It is reported that approximately 40 million people are suffering from dementia, globally. Dementia is a group of symptoms that affect neurons and cause some mental disorders, such as losing memory. Alzheimer's disease (AD) which is known as the most common cause of dementia, is one of the top medical care concerns across the world. Although the exact sources of the disease are not understood, is it believed that aggregation of amyloid-beta (Aβ) outside of neuron cells and tau aggregation or neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs) formation inside the cell may play crucial roles. In this paper, we are going to review studies that targeted inhibition of amyloid plaque and tau protein tangle formation,...
Data-driven Formulation of a Super Element for FE Analysis of Lattice Structures
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Asghari, Mohsen (Supervisor) ; Hosseini, Ehsan (Supervisor)
Abstract
Additive manufacturing enables fabricating lattice structures with tailored mechanical responses based on lattice materials. Full exploitation of such a possibility requires reliable and efficient mechanical analysis tools to be explored by topology optimization algorithms for designing the interior architecture of the structures to meet the desired mechanical behavior. However, detailed mechanical analysis of lattice-based structures using the conventional finite element approach is prohibitively expensive due to lattices’ complex and fine features that demand adopting very fine space discretization. As an alternative, equivalent models based on the homogenization principle have widely been...

Abstract
This paper presents an evaluation of two distinct techniques to improve energy absorption capability of an accordion cellular structure with close-to-zero Poisson's ratio. For this purpose, fiber-reinforcement and foam-filling methods were employed to address the material enhancement and to obtain light and tough structures with high specific energy absorption. Employing an innovated additive manufacturing based on material extrusion process, specimens of glass fiber-reinforced PLA were produced in both in-plane directions to compare with the un-reinforced counterpart. In continue, some of the 3D printed samples were strengthened by means of polyurethane foam in their hollow structure. The...

Abstract
Protein aggregation, such as amyloid fibril formation, is molecular hallmark of many neurodegenerative disorders including Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and Prion disease. Indole alkaloids are well-known as the compounds having the ability to inhibit protein fibrillation. In this study, we experimentally and computationally have investigated the anti-amyloid property of a derivative of a synthesized tetracyclic indole alkaloid (TCIA), possessing capable functional groups. The fibrillation reaction of Hen White Egg Lysozyme (HEWL) was performed in absence and presence of the indole alkaloid. For quantitative analysis, we used Thioflovin T binding assay which showed ~50% reduction in fibril...

, Article Proc. of IMechE Part H: Journal of Engineering in Medicine ; 2009, Vol. 223, No. 6, pp. 663-675 Journal of NeuroEngineering and Rehabilitation ; Volume 11, Issue 1, 30 April 2014, Article number 78 ; Meghdari, Ali ; Vossough, Gholam Reza ; Sharif University of Technology
Abstract
The aim of this study is to employ feedback control loops to provide a stable forward dynamics simulation of human movement under repeated position constraint conditions in the environment, particularly during stair climbing. A ten-degrees-of-freedom skeletal model containing 18 Hill-type musculotendon actuators per leg was employed to simulate the model in the sagittal plane. The postural tracking and obstacle avoidance were provided by the proportional—integral—derivative controller according to the modulation of the time rate change of the joint kinematics. The stability of the model was maintained by controlling the velocity of the body's centre of mass according to the desired centre of...
Design and Construction of a Soft Actuated Exoskeleton for Hand Rehabilitation of Stroke Patients
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Ghafari, Ali (Supervisor) ; Meghdari, Ali (Supervisor)
Abstract
The main goal of this thesis is the design and development of a rehabilitation device for helping patients “to improve blood circulation” & retain and recover their abilities if possible that were lost during the stroke or a accident like that (my research in karaj/iran shows that it is possible by just movement of the specific body part). The focus is on hand in this thesis because Injuries to the hand are common and can be very debilitating since our hands are our primary means for interacting with our world. For rehabilitation in case of human hand there are several practices that should be done for patients either in home or in a rehabilitation center, time and money that is supposed to...

Abstract
In the past few decades, shaking tables are widely used to evaluate system response of structures under seismic excitations. These devices are used without any fundamental research performed on a shaking table system as an entity model. In most of these studies for simplicity, it is assumed that there exist no considerable vibration and displacement around the shaking tables, and no attention is paid to the peripheral substances such as soil settled under the foundation.
In this thesis, result of ambient vibration test on shaking table system (solid deck, concrete foundation and soil layer) has been presented. Precise sensors known as low frequency and high accuracy accelerometers have...

Comparison between Performance of Stone Columns and RAPs from the Bearing Capacity and Settlement Reduction Viewpoints
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Pak, Ali (Supervisor)
Abstract
Out of several ground improvement techniques available, stone columns have been widely used. This technique has been successfully applied to increase the bearing capacity and to reduce the settlement for foundation of structures like liquid storage tanks, earthen embankments, raft foundations, etc., where a relatively large settlement is permissible. This technique has, generally, been proven successful in increasing the stiffness of weak soils, upgrading their safe bearing capacity, and reducing their total and differential settlements, as well as speeding up their consolidation process. The beneficial effects of stone column installation in weak deposits is manifested in the form of...
Performance of Partially Filled Mini-Channels with Porous Media
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Nouri, Ali (Supervisor) ; Moosavi, Ali (Co-Advisor)
Abstract
Laminar forced convection flow through a channel partially filled with a porous material was numerically studied in this thesis. The Navier-Stokes and Brinkman-Forchheimer equations were used to model the fluid flow in the free and porous regions, respectively. Coupling of the pressure and velocity fields was resolved using the SIMPLEC algorithm. The local thermal equilibrium was adopted in the energy equation. The effects of the thermal conductivity ratio, Darcy number, porosity, Reynolds number and height of the porous insert on velocity and temperature field were investigated. The results show that the flow behavior and its associated heat transfer are susceptible to the variation of the...
Improvement of Stability of Haptic Force Interaction with Virtual Environments Using a Haptic Interface with a Separate Tracker
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Meghdari, Ali (Supervisor) ; Nahvi, Ali (Supervisor)
Abstract
In the present study, a new version of haptic devices is presented in which user’s hand is in contact with the device just while collision with virtual surface. In this system, the position of user’s finger can be traced by using a camera and the haptic device follows user’s finger at the distance of about two centimeters. While the haptic device approaches to the virtual surface, gradually reduces its speed and stops about two centimeters distant of virtual plane. Then user’s hand collides with the haptic device which is static. Greater fidelity, transparency, more stability and also no need to large actuators are of the advantages of this system. In this project, first we present a new...
Simulation of the Biomolecule Imaging and Manipulation Via AFM by Molecular Dynamics Method
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Meghdari, Ali (Supervisor) ; Moosavi, Ali (Supervisor)
Abstract
In this thesis we try to find optimized parameters for imaging and manipulation of a biosample with AFM. For this we have prepared a numerous Molecular Dynamics simulation and find some reliable result. So, first we have focused on imaging process in Non contact mode (the less harmful mode). Then we headed into the manipulation process. The main problem about manipulating a biosample is the environment. In imaging section, the process of imaging a biomolecule by AFM is modeled using molecular dynamics simulations. Since the large normal force exerted by the tip on the biosample in contact and tapping modes may damage the sample structure and produce irreversible deformation, the non-contact...
