    Reactive milling synthesis of nanocrystalline Al-Cu/Al2O3 nanocomposite

    Abstract
    Nanocrystalline Al-4 wt% Cu alloy reinforced with nanometric Al2O3 particles was synthesized by in situ reactive milling of Al and CuO powder mixture. X-ray diffraction (XRD), differential thermal analysis (DTA) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) techniques were employed to study the mechanically induced solid state reaction between the blended powders. The mechanical milling stages were studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), bulk density measurement and laser particle size analyzer.     Abstract
    In this study the influences of predeformation and heat treatment conditions on stress-induced melt activating process (SIMA) of A319 aluminum alloy were investigated. At 30% of predeformation a dominant globular structure of grains was obtained. However, further increasing of the predeformation rate considerably reduced the shape factor. The holding time of 10-15 min at semi-solid temperature of 580 °C was suggested in order to prevent grain growth. Coarsening of the grains by excess time or temperature of heat treatment reduced the tensile strength of the alloy. © 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved

    Abstract
    The objective of this work was to gain a quantitative and qualitative understanding of the degree to which porosity influences thermal-fatigue performance and other mechanical properties of A319 aluminum casting alloy over ranges of commercial interest. The number of cycles to failure for each test was recorded. An increase in porosity content caused degradation in thermal-fatigue life and other mechanical properties.     Gradual chemical (displacement) reaction between CuO and Al powders during high-energy attrition milling under a high purity argon atmosphere was studied. Differential thermal analysis (DTA), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) techniques were employed to study the solid-state reaction. It was shown that the solid-state reaction occurred during mechanical alloying (MA) and resulted in the dissolution of copper into the aluminum lattice and formation of nanometric alumina particles.     Abstract
    Hydroxyapatite (HAp) nanostrips were rapidly obtained during a mild microwave heating method. Applying microwave irradiation to Ca(NO3)2·4H2O/CTAB/Na2HPO4 precursor solution, the HAp precipitation process was occurred directly and without common crystallographic transformations including dissolution and slow recrystallization. The cationic surfactant CTAB was used as a soft template to modify nucleation and growth process. TEM investigations showed that the fabricated nanostrips had a width and length of about 10 and 55 nm, respectively.     Self-assembled dandelion-like hydroxyapatite (HAp) nanostructures were successfully synthesized via a mild template-free hydrothermal process, using ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) as the surfactant. The obtained dandelion-like HAp nanostructures were between 5 and 8 μm in diameter and were composed of radially oriented nanorods with an average diameter of about 200 nm. The X-ray diffraction analysis and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy were used to characterize the crystalline phase and purity of the synthesized nanostructures. The effect of the amount of memory on performance is characterized, and a simple memory-limited decoder is proposed; its performance is shown to be close to that of the best possible decoder (without any restrictions on the computational complexity or its functional form), using genie-aided upper bounds.     The LTI-Poisson model is a natural extension of the conventional memoryless Poisson channel to include memory, and can model the ISI effect in diffusion based molecular communication networks. In this paper, we exploit prior art on linear ISI channels to provide a computable finite-letter characterization of the capacity of single-hop LTI-Poisson networks. Then we find more explicit single-letter lower and upper bounds on the capacity in the point to point case.     In this paper, a simple memory limited transmitter for molecular communication is proposed, in which information is encoded in the diffusion rate of the molecules. Taking advantage of memory, the proposed transmitter reduces the ISI problem by properly adjusting its diffusion rate.
