    Abstract
Large-scale simulation of spiking neural networks on hardware with a remarkable resemblance to their mathematical models is a key objective of the neuromorphic discipline. This issue is, however, considerably resource-intensive due to the presence of nonlinear terms in neuron models. This paper proposes a novel uniform piecewise linear segmentation approach for nonlinear function evaluations. Employing the proposed approach, we present a uniform-segmented adaptive exponential neuron model capable of accurately producing various responses exhibited by the original model and suitable for efficient large-scale implementation. In contrast to previous nonuniform-segmented neuron models, the...

    Abstract
In this study a 2D cubic chamber model filled with paraffin is analyzed with and without the inclusion of magnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles at concentrations of 0.5, 1, 1.5 and 2 wt%, and an external magnetic field of intensities 0.005, 0.01, 0.015 and 0.02 T. It is ascertained that adding magnetic nanoparticles leads the horizontal temperature gradient to be reduced owing to increments in thermal conductivity. Additionally, this feature is found to be accelerated by applying an external magnetic field, which shapes highly conductive cluster formations of nanoparticles. However, since the increase in nanoparticle concentration and magnetic intensity increases the composite viscosity, there is an...

    Abstract
this paper presents two new methods for power flow calculation of power systems in presence of Dynamic Flow Controller (DFC), which is a new member of FACTS controllers. In first method A new steady state model of DFC is introduced for the implementation of the device in the conventional Newton-Raphson power flow algorithm. The impact of DFC on power flow is accommodated by adding new entries and modifying some existing ones in the linearized Jacobian equations of the same system without DFC. The focus of second method is on the discrete nature of the DFC and including its effects on power flow. This method is based on Nabavi model for FACTS devices. A case study on a power system located in...

    Abstract
The sand–bentonite mixture is used as the buffer layer in nuclear waste disposals. The buffer layer, as a non-permeable protective layer, is generally exposed to temperature gradients and the long-term subjection to temperature results in creep and more intact structure for the layer. In the present study, thermally induced structure and its effects on the isotropic compression behavior and volume change behavior of buffer layer are evaluated. Thermal consolidation tests were conducted using a modified triaxial cell capable of handling temperatures up to 90 °C. In order to investigate the effects of thermal gradients on the behavior of the mixture, saturated specimens were cured at constant...

    Abstract
In this work, magnetite nanoparticles (mean particle size about 20 nm) were synthesized via coprecipitation method. In order to investigate the kinetics of nanoparticle formation, variation in the amount of reactants within the process was measured using pH-meter and atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) instruments. Results show that nanoparticle formation behavior can be described by Avrami equations. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were performed to study the chemical and morphological characterization of nanoparticles. Some simplifying assumptions were employed for estimating the nucleation and growth rate of magnetite nanoparticles

Elastic responses of bi-material media reinforced by interfacial thin films under asymmetric loading

    , Article International Journal of Solids and Structures ; Volume 254-255 , 2022 ; 00207683 (ISSN) Ahmadi K. A., K ; Jarfi, H ; Eskandari, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2022
    Abstract
In this paper, the elastic solution to the problem of an isotropic bi-material full-space reinforced by a perfectly bonded thin film across the media interface and subjected to arbitrary asymmetric interfacial loading is addressed. To not include any simplifications, the thin film is first considered as a layer having a finite thickness, and with the aid of Fourier expansion of Muki's potential functions in Hankel transformed space, the formulation of the problem is obtained for a tri-material full-space. Then, knowing that the flexural stiffness of the thin film is negligible, its thickness and shear modulus are assumed to tend to zero and infinity, respectively, such that its in-plane...

Multiple mechanical and electrochemical measurements were performed to characterize the fabricated pores. Pore fabrication results showed that a wide range of pore sizes, from 350 nanometers to more than 30 micrometers, can be constructed by employing this method. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) implied that the...

Patient-specific fluid–structure interaction simulation of the LAD-ITA bypass graft for moderate and severe stenosis: A doubt on the fractional flow reserve-based decision

    , Article Biocybernetics and Biomedical Engineering ; Volume 42, Issue 1 , 2022 , Pages 143-157 ; 02085216 (ISSN) Tajeddini, F ; Firoozabadi, B ; Pakravan, H. A ; Ahmadi Tafti, S. H ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Fractional flow reserve (FFR)-based decision improves the outcomes of percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) for some patients, while its effectiveness in improving the results of coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) is unclear, in particular for moderate stenosis. It may be due to the fact that FFR cannot take into account the impacts of competitive flow (CF), intimal hyperplasia (IH), as well as compliance mismatch (CMM). As a result, two questions arise 1) whether FFR is a sufficient factor to decide to perform the CABG for patients with moderate to severe stenosis or not and 2) whether post-operative FFR shows the effectiveness of a graft. To shed light on this matter, two...

    Abstract
In this study Al2O3-SiC micro/nanocomposites have been fabricated by mixing alumina nanopowders and silicon carbide micro/nanopowders, followed by hot pressing at 1550, 1600, 1650 and 1700°C. The density, mechanical properties and fracture mode of Al2O3-SiC composites containing different volume fractions (2.5%, 5%, 7.5%, 10% and 15%) of micro/nanoscale SiC particles were investigated and compared with those of alumina. The relative density of composites could reach values very close to theoretical density, especially after sintering at 1700°C. However, relative density declined by increasing the SiC fraction at the same sintering temperature. The flexural strength of composites was best for...
