Laboratory Investigation For Unsymmetric Rectangular Weir

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Aghazadeh, Pooya (Author) ; Borghei, Mahmood (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Sharp crested weirs are one of the main and oldest means of measuring discharge in water conveyance systems. Many studies have been done on sharp rectangular weirs and have provided many relationships regarding the effect of geometric parameters and various factors on discharge coefficient of the weirs. In some places, due to existence of obstacles or barriers in the channel, it is impossible to create a symmetrical continuous weir some other cases, multiple or asymmetric weirs should be used, which is the main concept of this project.Since it seems unlikely that a purely mathematical model can review the impact of the multiplicity and asymmetry of these weirs without using empirical...

In Vivo-Based Artificial Neural Networks to Predict 3d Human Body Posture and Lumbosacral Joint Moment During Lifting Activities

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Aghazadeh Shabestari, Farzad (Author) ; Arjmand, Navid (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Manual material handling (MMH) is associated with mechanical back injuries. To manage such injuries, musculoskeletal models are employed to estimate spinal loads during MMH. These models require, as input, 3D-position of the hand-load and body posture whose measurements involve skillful and time-consuming motion analysis investigations. In order to facilitate the procedure of posture measurements and load estimations, three coupled artificial-neural-networks (ANNs) were developed. To predict whole body posture, ANN1 was trained based on our novel measurements on 15 individuals. Each individual performed several static-tasks by holding 0, 5, and 10 kg weight at 9 different anterior-left...

    Elsevier Ltd  2020
    Abstract
Biomechanical modeling approaches require body posture to evaluate the risk of spine injury during manual material handling. The procedure to measure body posture via motion-analysis techniques as well as the subsequent calculations of lumbosacral moments and spine loads by, respectively, inverse-dynamic and musculoskeletal models are complex and time-consuming. We aim to develop easy-to-use yet accurate artificial neural networks (ANNs) that predict 3D whole-body posture (ANNposture), segmental orientations (ANNangle), and lumbosacral moments (ANNmoment) based on our measurements during load-handling activities. Fifteen individuals each performed 135 load-handling activities by reaching (0...

Mitigating the Inrush Current of V/V Transformers Using Railway Conditioners

    , Article IEEE Access ; Volume 12 , 2024 , Pages 50885-50897 ; 21693536 (ISSN) Aghazadeh, A ; Hajipour, E ; Li, K ; Azizi, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    2024
    Abstract
Inrush current is high-magnitude current drawn by power transformers upon energization. The severity of inrush current depends on factors such as the transformer's residual flux and the voltage phase angle at the energization instant. This paper proposes a flux matching method for the energization of V/V traction transformers to mitigate inrush current. This is achieved by adjusting the residual flux of the core to an appropriate reference value and then obtaining the proper energization instant. To this end, the method only requires knowledge of nominal voltage and excitation current, eliminating the need to acquire transformer's parameters/design information. The railway power conditioner,...

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery ; Volume 39, Issue 6 , 2024 , Pages 3255-3267 ; 08858977 (ISSN) Aghazadeh, A ; Hajipour, E ; Terzija, V ; Azizi, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    2024
    Abstract
Inrush current refers to the high-magnitude current drawn by a power transformer upon energization. The severity of inrush current is a function of the instantaneous value of voltage at the energization instant and the transformer's residual flux density. This paper proposes an effective energization method for mitigating the inrush current of single-phase power transformers. The method does not rely on the knowledge of transformer design specifications, but the magnitude of the transformer's excitation current. The reference residual flux density is determined with respect to the limitations of the closing operation of the circuit breaker. The method then adjusts the residual flux density...

    Abstract
The vision of advanced long-term evolution (LTE-A) project is set to ultimate increase of network capacity in heterogeneous networks (HetNets). In HetNets with small cell configuration, a considerable majority of user devices is eventually connected to the macrocell base station (MBS), while small base stations (BSs), such as femtocell access points (FAPs), are still without any user. This results in unbalanced load and reduces the data rate of macrocell user equipment (MUE). In this paper, a method is proposed for load balancing among FAPs, while desired throughput is achieved. The proposed method uses the estimated received signal strength from different BSs and adjusted pilot signals....

    Abstract
Long-term electricity load and price forecasts have become critical inputs to energy service provider (ESP) decision makings in restructured environments. This paper presents a three-stage hierarchical approach for long-term electricity load forecasting. These stages are called yearly trend model (YTM), weekly trend model (WTM), and daily trend model (DTM). The first stage fits an appropriate function to data and extracts its yearly trend. The weekly and daily trends are then extracted using the Box-Jenkins method in WTM and DTM, respectively. For doing so, candidate trends are identified using auto correlation function (ACF) and partial auto correlation function (PACF) plots. Then, Akaike...

Modification and optimization of benzene alkylation process for production of ethylbenzene

    , Article Chemical Engineering and Processing: Process Intensification ; Volume 50, Issue 1 , 2011 , Pages 31-36 ; 02552701 (ISSN) Ebrahimi, A. N ; Sharak, A. Z ; Mousavi, S. A ; Aghazadeh, F ; Soltani, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2011
    Abstract
In this paper, an industrial ethylbenzene production unit has been simulated and the results are compared against five-day experimental data. According to prevailing unit condition, i.e. recycled ratio of benzene, benzene selectivity, and energy consumption, the unit is not working under its optimum conditions for minimum cost of ethylbenzene production. In the current design, high amount of benzene recycle (6:1) causes to have an additional cost due to fractionation of ethylbenzene from benzene. A new approach is proposed to modify the benzene alkylation process and reduce the unit's energy consumption. In the newly designed scheme, two double-bed alkylation reactors converted into four...

    Abstract
Over the last decades, several approaches have been proposed in the literature to incorporate users' perceptions of travel costs, their bounded rationality, and risk-taking behaviors into network equilibrium modeling for traffic assignment problem. While theoretically advanced, these models often suffer from high complexity and computational cost and often involve parameters that are difficult to estimate. This study proposes an alternative approach where users' imprecise perceptions of travel times are endogenously constructed as fuzzy sets based on the probability distributions of random link travel times. Two decision rules are proposed accordingly to account for users' heterogeneous...

    Abstract
As machine learning tasks continue to evolve, the trend has been to gather larger datasets and train increasingly larger models. While this has led to advancements in accuracy, it has also escalated computational costs to unsustainable levels. Addressing this, our work aims to strike a delicate balance between computational efficiency and model accuracy, a persisting challenge in the field. We introduce a novel method that employs core subset selection for reweighting, effectively optimizing both computational time and model performance. By focusing on a strategically selected coreset, our approach offers a robust representation, as it efficiently minimizes the influence of outliers. The...

    Abstract
A mathematical time-dependent and isothermal model based on the grain model has been developed to simulate the kinetic and thermal behaviors of a porous iron oxide pellet undergoing chemical reactions with a mixture of hydrogen, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and water vapor. Its novelty consists in fact that it can deal with a multi-species reducing gas and oxide pellet. In spite of previous models in which the pure reductant was applied as reducing gas, this model can indicate an actual view of pellet reduction including the effects of reducing gas utility and reducing gas ratio. A finite volume fully implicit technique was applied for solving the governing equations. The model has been...

    Abstract
In the present study, for the first time, a thermodynamically consistent large deformation theory is developed to model the multi physics problem of axonal swelling which is the hallmark of most of the brain diseases. To this end, the relevant axonal compartments are first explained and the corresponding model parts are introduced. Next, the problem is formulated as an open thermodynamic system and the corresponding constitutive and evolution equations are extracted utilizing the balance laws. Here, a multiplicative decomposition of the deformation gradient is used to capture the active behavior of the axonal actin cortex. Specific free energy functions are given for the model parts to...
